This Is Why You Must Check the Expiry Date of Sanitary Pads and Tampons

Sanitary pads and tampons are among the most used menstrual products globally. If, like many, you buy these products in bulk for convenience, there is a high possibility that you neglect or forget to check the expiry date on the package before using it. Missing this crucial point might result in some unwanted health issues.

To find out what side effects can be caused by using expired sanitary pads and tampons, we spoke to Dr Deepthi Ashwin, Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru. Read ahead to know what she shared:

Do Menstrual Products Have an Expiration Date?

According to a Cleveland Clinic report, yes, menstrual products, especially sanitary pads and tampons, do expire. It might seem strange that something made from cotton, plastic, and polypropylene has an expiry date.

Dr Deepthi Ashwin also confirmed that sanitary pads and tampons have an expiry date, and checking them before using them is more important than you think. Dr Ashwin explained, “At a glance, expired menstrual products might look safe and clean as they are dry products. Over time, their absorbing power diminishes, the adhesives become weaker, and the possibility of bacterial or fungal contamination increases.”

tampons expire

Dr Ashwin also underlines that using expired sanitary pads and tampons may cause skin irritation in sensitive areas, increase the risk of infection, and even affect your personal hygiene negatively. Therefore, checking the expiration date should not be taken just as a marketing trick, but it is also a way of keeping yourself safe.

How Long Can Sanitary Pads And Tampons Be Used?

Dr Ashwin shared, “Generally, sanitary pads and tampons are advised to be used within 3 to 5 years from the manufacturing date. Even if the expiry date is not indicated on the package, there is an expiration period as the materials, which include cotton, super-absorbent polymers, and adhesives, used for these products, deteriorate with time.”

Dr Ashwin also highlights that, as for period panties, they do not come with a definite expiry date; however, like any other fabric, they will gradually wear out as a result of washing, storage, and even if they are exposed to moisture for a long time.

Risk Of Mould In Sanitary Pads

If you ever find that your sanitary pad has changed colour, smells strange, or has some powdery spots on it, do not hesitate to throw it away right away, as it might be a result of developed mould or fungi.

Dr Ashwin stated, “If the pads are placed in a humid and wet area, or if they are not packed properly, then even if they are sealed in wrappers, they can get infected with fungus, mould, or bacteria.” She highlighted that heat and moisture are the main promoters of microorganisms.

Side Effects Of Using Expired Menstrual Products

Dr Ashwin highlights the reasons why one should strictly avoid using expired sanitary pads and tampons:

Reduced Absorbency

As pads and tampons get older, the absorbent fibres in them become less effective. At times, they may leak, cause discomfort, and fail to properly absorb menstrual flow.

Decreased Stickiness

The adhesive that helps pads stick to fabrics is the one that suffers the most from weakening with time. This results in the pad slipping or bunching up, and, hence, rashes and friction irritations occur.

Risk of Infection

Expired cotton and absorbent gels become moisture traps and may also support bacterial growth. The potential for urinary tract infections (UTIs), yeast infections, and skin infections is, therefore, increased to a great extent.

Skin Irritation and Rashes

Old materials may be degraded and accelerated by friction. The top layer of pads, for instance, can cause an itching sensation, redness, and even a burning feeling.

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

Toxic shock syndrome most often happens if a tampon is left in place for long periods. It is rare, but using aged or deteriorated tampons may lead to TSS, which is a tricky and potentially fatal bacterial infection. Cells of the old fibres can separate, thus making it easier for bacteria to multiply.

How To Store Menstrual Products To Increase Their Lifespan?

If you want to keep your pads, tampons, and period panties safe for a long duration, you should:

  • Store in a cool and dry place without any contact with water.
  • Do not keep them in bathrooms where humidity is always present.
  • Make sure the packages are closed and neat.
  • While travelling, store the products in sealed boxes or cloth bags.
  • Do not allow sunlight to reach menstrual products because the rays can gradually deteriorate the materials.
  • Good storage not only prolongs their use but also keeps them hygienic.

Menstrual Hygiene Tips to Follow

  • Changing pads every 5 to 6 hours and tampons every 4 to 8 hours is a must.
  • Washing your hand is necessary before and after product handling.
  • Wear breathable panties that do not retain moisture.
  • If your skin is sensitive, don't use scented pads or tampons.
  • Period panties should be washed and dried properly before wearing them again.
  • Never put on a pad or tampon if it has changed colour, is damp, or looks old.
  • If you buy in bulk, keep track of the manufacture/expiry dates.

Bottomline

Experts suggest it is important to check the expiry date of sanitary pads and tampons, as neglecting this can not only lead to skin irritation or allergy, but in rare cases, it can also turn into a difficult situation by affecting your vaginal health. You can increase the lifespan of these products by storing them in the right way, but they still need to be thrown out after a certain period of time.
