Stomach cancer is a serious health concern, and while various factors contribute to its development, diet plays a crucial role. Understanding the foods that may increase the risk of stomach cancer can empower you to make informed choices for your health.
Talking to the team of OnlyMyHealth, Dr Lakhan Kashyap, Consultultanht, Medical Oncology, Manipal Hospitals, Baner, Pune, listed some foods that can increase your risk of stomach cancer.
Processed and Pickled Foods
Consuming high amounts of processed and pickled foods, such as sausages, pickles, and cured meats, has been associated with an elevated risk of stomach cancer. “During the processing of food, there are certain preservatives which are added. These can cause an increase in the carcinogenics in these foods,” said Dr Kashyap.
Salty and Smoked Foods
Excessive intake of salty and smoked foods, like salted fish and smoked meats, has been linked to an increased risk of stomach cancer. The high salt content can damage the stomach lining, promoting the development of cancerous cells, said Dr Kashyap.
He added, “Helicobacter pylori is an infectious bacteria, which affects the stomach lining, and is most often seen in regions of low socioeconomic standing. Excessive salt aggravates this bacteria and can lead to stomach cancer.”

Red and Processed Meat
Red meat, particularly when processed, has been identified as a potential contributor to stomach cancer. Nitrites used in processing and compounds formed during cooking at high temperatures may play a role in cancer development.
Dr Kashyap shared, “Many studies have shown that when processed food that is high in salt is heated, it resulted in an increased incidence of stomach cancer.”
Low-Fibre Diets
Inadequate fibre intake has been associated with an increased risk of stomach cancer. According to a study published by researchers from the Nanjing University School of Medicine, dietary fibre intake is inversely proportional to the risk of stomach cancer.
Fiber-rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, help maintain a healthy digestive system and may protect against cancer.
