Dysentery is a type of intestinal infection which affects people and causes severe diarrhoea. It can be very irritating and problematic condition as the person is restricted and loses most of its energy without being able to digest the nutrients. This intestinal infection can be caused due to contaminated water and result of poor hygiene. Let us see what the probable symptoms, causes and treatment plans for this intestinal disease.

What is Dysentery Disease?

We spoke to Dr. Ishan Kumar Rastogi, General Physician, Vozart Healthcare Hospital, Kanpur to know more about this disease. He told that it is an intestinal infection that happens in the dysentery disease occurs in the lower intestine of the stomach. It is a very severe condition that can lead the person to diarrhoea and irritable bowel movements

Dysentery disease can increase over time and most of its symptoms are visible in the time frame of 3-7 days or so. It makes mucus grow inside your nose which travels to your nasal tract and get accumulated over times. Doctor recommends to get diagnosed once, if the stomach pain lasts for more than 3-4 days constantly. 

Symptoms of Dysentery Disease

  • Abdominal cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • High Fever
  • Dehydration 
  • Constant pain while having bowel movements
  • Loose motions

Types of Dysentery Disease

People who experience dysentery symptoms can be caused because of bacteria such as Shigella, campylobacter and other infection. However shingles is one of the most common type of dysentery disease and people mostly get diagnosed of this bacterial infection.

Another types of infection caused is single celled parasite that infects your intestines. This dysentery disease is also called amebiasis which is a comparatively less caused disease. Amebic dysentery usually occurs in the tropical weather and with poor sanitary conditions. It occurs more in the north eastern side of the country more often.

What Causes Dysentery Disease?

Shingles disease or any other dysentery disease which is caused because of this particular bacterium is caused because of environmental factors. This also includes getting contaminated water for drinking or coming in contact with. Other conditions which might affect dysentery disease are-

  • Poor hand washing technique
  • Having contaminated food
  • Drinking some contaminated beverage or drinks
  • Swimming or getting into a water body that is made up of contaminated water.
  • Being in physical contact with infected person

Children are at higher risk of infection for dysentery disease because it can increase the risk of shingles and can spread easily among them. It happens so because children touch many surfaces which might be contaminated with the bacteria causing this infection. Dysentery infection can happen at home, day care centre, school and nursing homes, etc.

Treatment for Dysentery Disease

Shingles can be treated effectively if the infection has not spread in the intestine a lot. In majority of cases people with dysentery disease are asked to have more fluids and plenty of water to flow down dysentery infection. 

Other over the counter medications are given in terms for relieving cramps and diarrhoea. However you must avoid drugs that slows down your intestinal functions and worsens your health condition. 

Severe cases of shingles or any other dysentery disease can be treated with antibiotics that results to resistant in some cases. It can be often seen that symptoms of this disease improve in the matter of couple of days. It may be possible that parasites could be given drug treatment to follow up when the parasites are gone. In some conditions, the doctors may need an intravenous drip to replace the fluids and prevent dehydration.

What are Risks of getting infected with Dysentery Disease?

  • Infection in the blood stream
  • Getting seizures, mostly in children
  • Post-infectious arthritis
  • Haemolytic uremic syndrome that is responsible to damage red blood cells
