Do Your Hands Sweat A Lot? Here's What You Should Know About The Condition

Do you find yourself constantly dealing with sweaty palms that make handshakes awkward and can be quite uncomfortable? Sweaty hands, also known as palmar hyperhidrosis, can be frustrating, but there are ways to manage and treat this condition.

“Palmar hyperhidrosis, often known as sweaty palms, is a medical disorder that causes excessive perspiration of the palms. This illness can be both physically and socially and emotionally difficult for those who suffer from it,” said Dr Somnath Gupta, Consultant Physician and Diabetologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

It is a disorder that affects up to 3% of the population, as per Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia (ABD). It has a substantial influence on their quality of life.

As per Dr Gupta, following are the risk factors for sweating hands:

  • Family history of the condition
  • Hormonal changes
  • Having medical conditions, such as hyperthyroidism or diabetes

Remedies To Prevent Hyperhideosis

Antiperspirant for Hands

Just as you apply antiperspirant under your arms, there are specialised antiperspirants designed for hands. These products can help reduce excessive sweating by blocking the sweat glands temporarily. Apply them before bed for the best results.

Topical Solutions

As per expert, over-the-counter lotions and creams containing aluminium chloride can be applied to your hands to reduce sweating. Make sure to follow the instructions on the product carefully.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Making some lifestyle changes can also help. Avoid spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol, as they can trigger sweating. Stress management techniques like yoga or meditation can be beneficial.

Surgery

In severe cases where other treatments fail, surgical options such as sympathectomy may be considered. This involves cutting or clamping the nerves that cause excessive sweating.

What works best for you may vary, so it's essential to consult with a doctor to determine the most suitable treatment for your specific situation.
