Oral health is an integral part of overall health and well-being. Our mouth plays a vital role in our daily life as it helps us communicate, eat and smile. However, poor oral hygiene can be  a host of oral diseases and conditions that can impact our health in more ways than one.

1. Tooth decay

Tooth decay is the most common oral disease, affecting people of all ages. It occurs when the bacteria in the mouth break down the sugar and produce acid that erodes the tooth's enamel. Tooth decay can lead to cavities, pain, and infection.

Causes

Poor oral hygiene, high sugar and carbohydrate diet, dry mouth, smoking, and certain medical conditions that decrease saliva production.

Prevention

Brush teeth twice a day, floss once a day, limit sugar and carbohydrate intake, visit the dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups and use fluoride toothpaste.

2. Gum disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection that affects the gums and supporting tissues of the teeth. It ranges from mild gingivitis to severe periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss.

Causes

Poor oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes, hormonal changes, and certain medications.

Prevention

4. Tooth sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is a common dental problem that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the enamel on the teeth wears away, exposing the sensitive inner layer of the tooth.

Brushing too hard, consuming acidic foods and drinks, gum disease, and teeth grinding.

Prevention

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, avoid acidic foods and drinks, manage gum disease, wear a mouthguard if you grind your teeth, and use desensitising toothpaste.

5. Dry mouth

Certain medications, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, ageing, and dehydration.

Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and caffeine, chew sugar-free gum, use a humidifier, and talk to your doctor about adjusting your medication if it causes dry mouth.
