‘I Didn’t Let Cancer Define Me’: How Mihika, Ovarian Cancer Survivor, Found Herself Through Hair Loss and Recovery

At just 27, Mihika Aishwaraya's life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In April 2023, she began experiencing intense abdominal pain, back pain, and bloating—symptoms that led to scans and, ultimately, a shocking diagnosis. With her wedding only a month away, Mihika had to pause everything to confront the challenges of treatment and recovery. Despite the physical, mental, and emotional toll, Mihika's resilience never wavered. She faced painful chemo sessions, surgery, and the complex aftermath with courage.

Today, on National Cancer Awareness Day, in a conversation with the OnlyMyHealth team, Mihika openly shared her battles with mental and physical health, the heartbreak of hair loss, and the strength she found in herself.

Mihika’s ordeal began in April 2023, when she experienced severe abdominal pain, back pain, and persistent bloating. After a few tests, her doctor confirmed her worst fear: ovarian cancer. To add to the shock, her diagnosis came just a month before her planned wedding. Despite the emotional toll, Mihika bravely stepped into the treatment process, enduring chemotherapy sessions, surgery, and post-operative care.

“The surgery went on for five hours,” she recalls. “I woke up in pain in the ICU, with my mother by my side. Regaining mobility felt impossible at first, and I couldn’t bear to see my parents worry. I kept smiling to hide my battles, wanting to stay strong for them.”

Physical Changes and the Heartbreak of Hair Loss

One of the biggest challenges for Mihika was the loss of her hair—a painful and highly visible reminder of her battle. “When you hear about cancer, the first fear is usually about losing your hair,” she shares. The reality hit hard when her hair began falling out in clumps just two weeks after her first chemo. “My mother was strong for me, but seeing my hair scattered on my pillow every morning was deeply distressing,” Mihika says, recounting sleepless nights and anxiety attacks.

After facing the inevitable, she decided to shave her head. But the impact went beyond the hair on her scalp. “I lost my eyebrows and eyelashes too. I couldn’t even look at myself in the mirror. Being bald forced me to redefine my own sense of identity and femininity,” she said.

Mihika initially considered hiding from the world but eventually chose to confront her fears head-on. “I wore a wig, continued travelling, and even posted pictures on social media despite the stares and comments. People don’t understand the courage it takes to accept these changes,” she said.

Her experience was made worse by hurtful comments, but Mihika found a way to rise above them. “I realised beauty isn’t just about appearance; it’s what’s inside that matters. You have to embrace your inner strength and let it shine through,” she shares. Today, her hair has grown back thicker and more beautiful, a true testament to her resilience.

Mihika’s support network proved invaluable. Her family and friends stood by her, providing strength and encouragement. “My family was my rock, and their support helped me keep going,” she says. Her workplace, too, played a vital role by offering flexible work hours, which allowed her to balance her health with her professional responsibilities.

Changed Perspective on Life

Today, Mihika lives with a renewed appreciation for life. “I used to be afraid, especially after losing my hair, but I kept doing what I loved, even working from my hospital bed and travelling. I had to remind myself that cancer was in my body, not in my mind,” she says. This experience has changed her outlook entirely. “I now value every moment and hold on to hope no matter the circumstances. It’s about taking charge of your life, and that’s exactly what I’ve done.”

Her brother’s words after her first chemotherapy session continue to inspire her: “If you can beat cancer, you can face any challenge in life.” Mihika’s journey has indeed transformed her into a stronger, more confident individual, and she is determined to make each day count.

Having now been cancer-free for a year, Mihika is passionate about raising awareness, especially about ovarian cancer. “Many women are unaware of the symptoms of ovarian cysts. Don’t ignore any symptoms, and see a doctor promptly; early detection is key to treatment,” she advises.

She also emphasises the importance of balanced nutrition and light physical activity as part of recovery. “Even a short walk helped me regain my strength and manage fatigue. Staying active really made a difference,” she notes. Regular medical follow-ups, too, have been essential in monitoring her post-surgery health.

Mihika’s journey is a powerful reminder of the strength within each of us. Her resilience, bravery, and positive outlook have not only helped her survive cancer but have also inspired countless others. For anyone facing similar struggles, she shares, “Hold on to hope, for it will guide you through. Remember, you’re stronger than you think, and you have the power to overcome anything.”
