Can Leukaemia be Prevented?
Leukaemia is a disease related to blood cells. It is very difficult to prevent leukaemia as it is governed by some uncontrollable factors. The risk of its occurrence can be lowered by identifying these factors.

The best way to prevent leukaemia is to modify your lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle reduces the risk of getting leukaemia to a great extent. A regular exercise regime followed by a healthy and balanced diet rich in antioxidants can minimise the chances of getting leukaemia. A regular flushing out of toxins removes all the harmful agents from the body that can trigger abnormal multiplication of the blood cells.
Another way to reduce the risk of leukaemia occurrence is by avoiding regular exposure to herbicides and insecticides. If you see sudden changes in weight loss or weight gain, consult a doctor. An early treatment in initial stages can prevent the severity of the disease.
There are certain food items which help to prevent leukaemia. These include a balanced diet containing large amount of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, skinless poultry, fish, beans and low-fat dairy products. Some food items possess cancer fighting properties such as berries, broccoli, flax seed, soy food, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, squash and walnuts. A diet rich in these food items will certainly prevent the onset of the disease.
A person can prevent the occurrence of the disease by making lifestyle changes to avoid certain risk factors. Leukaemia caused due to genetic changes or genetically acquired is impossible to prevent. People carrying the disease causing genes should stay away from triggering factors such as radiations, chemicals and certain food items which can initiate cancer. People suffering from Down’s syndrome and other blood disorders should undergo regular medical check ups to identify the disease in its initial stages.
In most of the cases, the causes of leukaemia are not known and this makes it very difficult to prevent the disease. There is no preventive treatment available till now to stop the development of leukaemia.
