Expert Lists The Benefits Of Probiotics In The Prevention And Treatment Of COVID-19

In the ongoing battle against COVID-19, researchers are exploring various avenues to strengthen our immune systems and improve overall health. One promising avenue that has gained attention is the use of probiotics.

These beneficial bacteria, known for their positive effects on gut health, might play a crucial role in supporting our immune response against the novel coronavirus, shared a 2022 study published in MDPI’s journal ‘Nutrients.’

To learn more about the benefits of probiotics in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, the team of OnlyMyHealth spoke to Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Global Hospitals, Parel, Mumbai.

Link Between Probiotics And COVID-19

Probiotics Can Help Manage Symptoms Of COVID-19

Probiotics are live microorganisms that confer health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. The gut is home to trillions of these microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiota. Another 2021 study published in ‘Nutrients’ suggested a strong connection between a healthy gut and a robust immune system.

“Probiotics may support the immune system and gut health, potentially reducing the risk of viral infections like COVID-19. They can enhance the balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut,” said Dr Agarwal.

“Probiotics may help alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms associated with COVID-19, such as diarrhoea. By promoting a healthy gut microbiota, probiotics may contribute to overall well-being during and after infection,” he added.

Here are some ways by which probiotics can alleviate the symptoms of COVID-19:

  • Reducing Severity and Duration of Respiratory Infections: Probiotics may help reduce the severity and duration of respiratory infections. While more research is needed specific to COVID-19, the potential benefits against respiratory viruses are encouraging.
  • Modulating Immune Response: Probiotics have been shown to modulate the immune response, enhancing the body's ability to fight infections. This modulation may contribute to a more efficient immune reaction against the coronavirus.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Effects: COVID-19 can lead to an exaggerated immune response, including inflammation. Probiotics, by promoting an anti-inflammatory environment in the gut, may help regulate the body's inflammatory response and prevent an overactive immune reaction.

Incorporating Probiotics Into Your Routine

Probiotics Can Help Manage Symptoms Of COVID-19

“The frequency of consumption varies, but incorporating probiotic-rich foods regularly as part of a balanced diet can be beneficial for overall health. Consultation with a healthcare professional is advisable for personalised recommendations,” recommended Dr Agarwal.

  • Dietary Sources: Include probiotic-rich foods in your diet, such as yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and kombucha.
  • Supplements: Probiotic supplements are available in various forms. Consult with a healthcare professional to determine the right strain and dosage for your specific needs.

While the research on probiotics and COVID-19 is still evolving, there is a growing body of evidence supporting the idea that a healthy gut microbiome, maintained in part by probiotics, contributes to a strong immune system. As always, consult with healthcare professionals for personalised advice tailored to your individual health needs.
