Split ends occur when the hair shaft splits or frays, usually as a result of damage or dryness. While there is no permanent solution to mend split ends, there are several home remedies that can help improve the appearance of your hair and prevent further damage. Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, suggest some simple and natural remedies to treat split ends:
Trimming
“The most effective way to get rid of split ends is to trim them. Regular haircuts every 6-8 weeks can help prevent split ends from travelling up the hair shaft,” Dr Chaudhary said.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is known for its moisturising properties. Apply warm coconut oil to the ends of your hair, leave it on for at least 30 minutes, and then wash it out with a mild shampoo.
Olive Oil
Olive oil can also help in treating split ends. Apply a small amount of olive oil to the ends of your hair, leave it on for about 30 minutes, and then wash it out.
Avocado Mask
A 2015 study, nutrients in avocado oil, such as potassium and magnesium, may bind cuticle cells, allowing hair to seem smooth and lustrous while also preventing breakage.

Mash a ripe avocado and apply it to the ends of your hair. Leave it on for about 30 minutes before washing it out. Avocado is rich in vitamins and fats that can nourish and hydrate the hair.
Egg Mask
Beat an egg and apply it to the ends of your hair. Leave it on for about 20 minutes before washing it out. Eggs are rich in protein, which can help strengthen the hair.
Honey and Yogurt
“Mix equal parts honey and yoghourt and apply the mixture to the ends of your hair. Leave it on for about 30 minutes before washing it out. This combination can help moisturise and condition the hair,” said Dr Chaudhary.
Aloe Vera Gel
Apply a small amount of aloe vera gel to the split ends. Aloe vera has soothing and moisturising properties that can benefit damaged hair.
Avoid Heat Styling
You should minimise the use of heat styling tools like flat irons and curling irons, as excessive heat can contribute to split ends. If you must use them, apply a heat protectant spray beforehand.
Gentle Hair Care
Use a wide-toothed comb to detangle wet hair, as wet hair is more prone to breakage. Avoid brushing wet hair vigorously.

Switch To Silk Pillowcase
Switch to a silk pillowcase, which causes less friction than cotton pillowcases and may minimise hair breakage. Remember that, while these home treatments can help control split ends, the best way to prevent them is with regular hair maintenance, a balanced diet, and good hair care techniques.
