Promotion is good news not only for your household budget but also for your heart health, according to a study. It says that people who work in an organisation with high promotion rates are 20 per cent less likely to develop heart complications. The researchers studied 4700 British civil servants and found that those who received quick promotions had around 20 per cent lesser risk of being diagnosed with a heart disease.
The study was conducted by Sir Michael Marmot, professor of epidemiology at University College London, and Micheal Anderson from University of California, Berkeley, and published in the Economic Journal. Sir Micheal expressed his findings as positive impact on health due to favourable shocks. According to him, being on the higher ladder of socioeconomic position does a lot to good to your health. Promotion is one of the sure ways of moving up that proverbial ladder.
Considerable research into the effect of health on success in work has been undertaken in which Whitehall civil servants in the past 15 years were studied. It was found that civil servants who suffered from serious childhood illnesses were not as likely to be promoted. However, the current research is exactly the opposite of this, as it studies the reverse impact, i.e. effect of success in the job on health. This is corroborated from the fact that Oscar winners and Nobel laureates outlive the nominees, and so do baseball players who reach Hall of Fame compared to those who fall just short of making it.
This research has revealed new information with regards to factors that affect the health of an individual. Mostly, the focus of the researchers is inclined to be on how the condition of health would impact the work of a person, but they never consider it the other way round. It is expected that such a trend would start after this research.
