How to Control Asthma Symptoms

Are you tired of missing school or work because of asthma attacks that have been attacking you frequently? People suffering from asthma avoid sports and rigorous exercises because it affects their breathing. Several people across the globe die because of asthma either because they never got it treated properly or never took any preventive measures against it. If you are thinking of taking any action to control the asthma symptoms, remember that the first step to a healthy life is to get the right diagnosis. Chronic cases of asthma, when left undiagnosed or untreated, leads to an everlasting lung damage.

 

  • Things you must always carry with you while you are on the road: a scarf or a bandana (make sure the cloth material thick and not flimsy), your inhaler, few important emergency numbers stored on your speed dial, your favourite relaxation tape or songs, a photocopy of your prescriptions and a dust mask. All the above will prevent dust from directly entering your nostrils.
  • Never stop medications on your own: most people make the mistake of discontinuing their asthma medications as soon as they start feeling better. This is harmful! Understand that those medications make you feel better and you are dependent on them. You feel alright because of the medicines and stopping them in the middle of a treatment can cause unprecedented damage to the improving condition of your lungs.
  • There is no permanent cure for asthma, but there is a way of controlling it. Do not miss out on the follow-up treatments arranged by your doctor. These sessions assess your development along with the symptoms and detect if you are responding to the current line of treatment. Accordingly, the doctor will change your dosage.
  • Write it down: each time you have an attack, take a note of it. Take into account even the milder ones and look for a pattern or a tendency in all of these. Mention what place you travel to or are in and note down the date. Assess the environmental conditions of the place you are in.
  • Say no to cigarettes: even if you have quit smoking or were never a smoker, let others know if you are being subjected to passive smoking. The person smoking next to you might not know your condition and therefore, it is necessary that you inform them!
  • Allergens: perfumes, pollen, dust being hurled on the road, cold air and extreme weather conditions, strong smell of aftershave gels, dogs etc are the common allergens that one must stay away from. To avoid these, tie a bandana around your face while you are walking on the road. It is time you protect yourself and prevent an asthma attack.
  • Stress: this cannot be controlled as we all are actively involved in our daily lives and wish to ensure a sense of security and stability. With asthma patients, however, the doctor usually prescribes several relaxation techniques to keep the muscles relaxed. Asthma attacks aggravate due to stress and anxiety and make sure you do not forget practicing the exercises every day. Swimming is one of the exercises recommended by doctors for asthma patients. This sport is extremely helpful in keeping a check on breathing in a controlled manner.
  • Coffee: if you must have coffee, confirm its consumption with your doctor. Caffeine doses help relax muscles, but the lung condition differs from person to person and a doctor’s discretionary advice on this is a must.
  • Breathing technique when it is getting tough: learn the correct breathing technique from your doctor when you know you are going to have an asthma attack. Whenever your airways feel constricted and you face difficulty in breathing, purse your lips and breathe sharply. Place one hand on your abdomen and the other hand on your chest. Breathe sharply through your nose and exhale very slowly. Imagine that you are blowing a candle kept in front of you.

 

Ask your doctor if you can always keep a peak flow meter with you. Keep your doctor’s number handy.
