Breastfeeding is extremely important as it is the only source of nutrition for a newborn baby for six months at least. First-time mothers can get anxious and worried about breastfeeding because it would be a completely new experience and there are several misconceptions related to breastfeeding to fuel their anxiety. Instead of believing anything you hear from people, it is best to consult a doctor. This world breastfeeding week, let us tell you five questions that you should ask your gynaecologist. We reached out to Dr. Bhagya Lakshmi S, Consultant Obstetrics, Gynaecologist & Laparoscopic Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad, for the answers. Read the article for more information.

Does breastfeeding hurt?

According to Dr. Bhagya Lakshmi, pregnant women should be educated about lactation and how to feed the baby before delivery. This helps them prepare for the procedure post-delivery as breastfeeding can get really painful and a lot of women complain about it.

Breasts are examined from the second trimester for inverted or retracted nipples and dryness, that are primary causes of painful breastfeeding. Adequate treatment is given and creams are given to make the areola and nipple supple.

Also, right feeding technique has to be taught like the chin of the baby should touch the breast, the areola should be in the mouth, mouth should be wide open and lower lip everted. It shouldn’t hurt the mother while feeding .

How do I know my baby is full?

This is another common query that mothers have. Babies are too tiny and require feeding at regular intervals. But how to understand that the baby is full? Here is what the doctor suggests:

  • A well fed baby gains weight by 30 gm / day
  • Baby passing urine minimum six to seven times a day
  • Audible swallowing heard during feeding with cheeks being full .
  • Alert, awake, calm baby during feeds

When to stop feeding?

Breastfeeding depends on the mother and baby. As long as the mother is okay feeding the baby, it should be fine. Similarly, as long as the baby is okay, feeding is also okay. However, the doctor mentions that exclusive breastfeeding should be continued for the first six months and continue breast feeding I.e complimenting breastfeeding with supplemental food should start from six months and continue breastfeeding for at least two years and beyond .

It is one of the common concerns of new moms, especially first-time mothers. Baby requires feeding even at night which can be discomforting for some moms due to an interrupted sleep. Here are two suggestions by doctor:

  • Give full feed at 11 pm so that baby sleeps for five to six hours in the night
  • In order to sleep peacefully for a couple of hours before the next feed,  make the baby sleep with partner and grandparents, that should help

What medications are safe to take while breastfeeding?

Most of the commonly used drugs and over-the-counter medicines are safe during breastfeeding. But it is always better to see a doctor before starting any medication.
