When after an Apicoectomy must one follow up?

Your endodontist will advice you regarding rest, medicines and what you can eat after the procedure.  You will need to apply ice to the area for about 10 to 12 hours after the surgery. The stitches are generally removed after 2 to 7 days.

After the surgery the area will swell and is painful. Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, diclofenac are effective for controlling pain. If the pain is severe your doctor may prescribe other medications. The soreness and swelling usually take about 14 days to heal.

  • Avoid smoking or eating crunchy or hard foods.
  • Avoid vigorous brushing and rinsing of the concerned area.
  • Avoid lifting your lip to look at the area as this can loosen the stitches and disturb the blood clot that is needed for healing.

If you have any problems after the surgery consult your dentist.
