In a conversation with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr. Aasim Maldar, Consultant - Endocrinologist and Diabetologist, P. D. Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Mumbai, said, “In one's early 30s, being mindful of signs is crucial, as symptoms may indicate hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or thyroid swelling.”

Common symptoms of thyroid in early 30s
Women go through a lot of hormonal changes in their early 30s which can lead to irregular menstrual cycles, weight fluctuations and even hair loss. Thyroid disorders have similar symptoms and thus are overlooked most of the time. Here’s a list of common symptoms that we’ve jotted down for you with the help of Dr Maldar.
1. Weight Fluctuations
Sudden fluctuations in weight is one of the most common symptoms of Thyroid dysfunction. As mentioned above, thyroid is majorly responsible for maintaining the speed of metabolism. When thyroid gland does not work properly, it slows down the metabolism leading to either excessive weight gain or weight loss.
2. Disrupted Sleep Patterns
Thyroid gland produces two main hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine which maintains body temperature, digestion, respiratory functions and heart rate. Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism can affect the function of these hormones. To this, Dr Maldar said, “An individual with thyroid dysfunction can face concentration difficulties and body temperature regulation problems, impacting sleep patterns.”

3. Irregular Menstrual Cycle
Thyroid dysfunction can lead to high production of protein sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), which can lead to irregular or missed period cycles. Higher production of prolactin can also affect menstrual cycles according to research by Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences.
4. Fertility Issues
When the thyroid hormone is not produced in the appropriate amounts that your body needs, it can disrupt your ovulation cycle and thus make it difficult for egg implantation. As a result, fertility issues can be faced by women having thyroid disorders.
5. Hair loss
According to Dr Maldar, hair loss is one of the common indicators of Thyroid disorders. Individuals suffering from thyroid disorders like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism can experience excess hair loss.
Apart from these, Dr Maldar pointed out a few more common symptoms. “Recognizable symptoms of thyroid disorders include fatigue, sexual problems, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, temperature regulation issues, alterations in bowel habits,” he said adding, “While these symptoms can signal various issues, persistent or worsening concerns merit evaluation by an endocrinologist.”
Risk Factors and Complications
When asked about risk factors and further complications concerning thyroid problems, Dr Maldar said, “Neglecting thyroid health may intensify symptoms and lead to complications, impacting fertility, pregnancy, and cardiovascular health adding, “Untreated thyroid disorders can increase the risk of thyroid cancer.”
