Uterine Fibroids: Here Are Some Symptoms To Know

Doctors generally define uterine fibroids as abnormal growths that occur in the uterus. It is to understand that many women may have fibroids without any obvious symptoms, others may experience difficulties due to the size, location, or quantity of fibroids.

According to the Office on Women's Health, from 20% to 80% of women will have them by the age of 50. However, most people have no symptoms and may never realise they have fibroids.

“Fibroids are slow-growing tumours found in women of reproductive age. However, more than half of such tumours cause no symptoms and so require no treatment, with the exception of an annual follow-up scan, which is required,” said Dr Manjula S. Patil, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Bangalore.

Menstrual Changes

Experiencing abnormally heavy and prolonged menstrual periods. Changes in the regularity of menstrual cycles, including unpredictable or irregular periods.

Pelvic Pain and Pressure

Persistent or intermittent pain in the pelvic region or lower back. Feeling fullness or pressure in the lower abdomen, similar to bloating.

Painful Periods

Fibroids can put pressure on the uterus or produce abnormal menstruation and pain, but they seldom cause symptoms.

Frequent Urination

According to American Fibroid Centres, as fibroids grow, they can extend the uterus, compressing and reducing the bladder's capacity. This can be a stressful and unpleasant experience for many women. Frequent urination causes you to be continuously near a toilet, wake up at night and even cancel plans with friends and family.

When To Seek Doctor

Following are the symptoms which indicate that you should take prompt action.

Constipation and Bloating

The pressure on the rectum caused by fibroids may lead to constipation and a sense of bloating. According to one study, 7.7% of women with uterine fibroids experienced severe constipation, bloating, or diarrhoea, whereas 4.7% did not.

Another research found that 195 premenopausal women with uterine fibroids discovered that 45% had incomplete emptying at the end of their bowel movements.

Difficulty Emptying the Bladder

Fibroids pressing against the bladder may cause difficulty fully emptying the bladder. Apart from above symptoms seek medical advice:

  • If you experience severe pelvic pain or discomfort.
  • If menstrual bleeding is exceptionally heavy, leading to anaemia.
  • If you have difficulty emptying your bladder or experience frequent urination.
  • If you are trying to conceive and face fertility challenges.
  • If you notice an enlargement of your abdomen or uterus.

Symptoms of uterine fibroids are essential for early detection and appropriate management. If you suspect you have uterine fibroids or are experiencing any of the mentioned symptoms, consult with a doctor. A thorough evaluation can help determine the best course of action, whether through monitoring, medical intervention, or surgical options, based on the severity and impact of the fibroids on your health.
