With an exponential increase in diabetic cases, diabetes-screening tests have become a good preventive method to keep a check on blood sugar levels. If the test shows positive result, you are diabetic or pre-diabetic. A negative result means a normal blood sugar level. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)
- Method - Type 2 diabetes can be diagnosed through OGTT. Usually performed in the morning, it requires a person to fast for 8-12 hours. First, the blood sample is drawn from the patient’s body following which he/she is given glucose solution to drink within a period of 5 minutes. Once the patient has had the glucose, blood is drawn at alternate intervals for measuring blood sugar (glucose) level.
- Dose of Glucose Given - WHO has recommended a 75 g of oral glucose dose for all adults. Children are given an amount of glucose solution according to their weight.
- Substances measured - Blood sugar level and renal glycosuria (amount of sugar excreted in urine despite normal body sugar).
- Diagnose - If a person has two-hour blood glucose in between 140 and 199 mg/dl, he is diagnosed with pre-diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). A diabetic person has two-hour blood glucose above 200 mg/dl.
Fasting Plasma Glucose Test
- Method - It requires a person to keep a fast for 8-12 hours. After the fast, the glucose (blood sugar level) is measured once.
- Diagnose - A person with 100 mg/dl has normal glucose level. Between 100 and 125 mg/dl means, a person has pre-diabetes or impaired fasting glucose. If blood sugar level rises above 125 mg/dl, the person is diabetic.
Postprandial Glucose Test
- Method - In postprandial blood sugar test, a person’s glucose level is checked exactly 2 hours after the consumption of meal. A blood sample is drawn.
- Diagnose - Two hours after meal, healthy people have normal blood sugar level and diabetic people have elevated blood sugar level. The postprandial glucose level of a person must be under 180 mg/dl.
