India Sees Rise in COVID-19 Cases and Fatalities, Southern States Most Affected


India's active caseload of COVID-19 has again crossed the 6,000 benchmark, with 378 new infections in the past 24 hours, as per the data reported by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Sunday, June 8th. The active caseload is now at 6,133, representing a significant rise from only 257 active patients reported on May 22nd.

Adding to the worry, the country has also reported six new COVID-19 fatalities over the weekend. All six deaths were from the Southern states, with three deaths in Kerala, two in Karnataka and one in Tamil Nadu. The fatalities in Karnataka comprised a 4-year-old male with pre-existing health conditions of Cor pulmonale and Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, who was found incidentally to be COVID-19 positive, and a 78-year-old male with Ischemic Heart Disease and Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura, incidentally positive for COVID-19.

Kerala remains at the center of the ongoing wave and is leading in the new cases with 144 new cases. The state has the highest percentage of active cases in the country at present, with 1,950 active infections. Kerala is followed by Gujarat at 105 new cases, West Bengal at 71, Rajasthan at 24, and Delhi at 21.

Although the increase in active cases is something to watch out for, the overall recovery rate is positive. In total, 6,237 COVID-19 patients have been cured or discharged since January 1st of the current year. But the year's cumulative death toll has now risen to 65.

Public health officials are calling for the ongoing practice of good hand hygiene, physical distancing, and mask-wearing in crowded places, particularly for the vulnerable population. This is being watched closely, and more advisories will follow as the trends develop.
