How Often Should You Wash Your Makeup Brushes? Dermatologist Weighs In

Makeup brushes are essential tools in any beauty routine, and keeping their hygiene in check is one of the most important aspects of using them. In fact, using dirty make-up brushes is one of the primary causes of clogged pores, pimples, skin irritation, and even infections such as pink eye or staph. This can even lead to brush performance, from product buildup over time, to patchy and less accurate makeup application. So, how often do you wash them? We got in touch with our expert, and here is what he shared with us.

"Brushes not only pick up product residue but also collect environmental impurities and bacteria from your skin. Regular washing prevents skin problems and maintains hygiene,” said Dr Sanjeev Gulati, Department of Dermatology, Sharda Hospital, Noida. Read ahead to know everything he explained to us.

How Frequently Should You Clean Them?

The funny thing is that not every brush should be cleaned at the same rate. However, here's a general rule of thumb, according to experts:

Foundation and Concealer Brushes: Recommended every one to three days

These brushes work with liquid and cream products, which are more likely to become clogged with bacteria and lead to acne breakouts or skin flare-ups.

Eye Brushes (eyeshadow, eyeliner, blending): Recommended once a week

Since they're used around the eyes, it's imperative to get them clean to prevent infections or irritation.

Blush, Bronzer, and Powder Brushes: Recommended every one to two weeks

These brushes don't hold as much bacteria but can pick up oils and dead skin cells in the long run.

Lip Brushes: Recommended after each use

These need to be cleaned well to prevent spreading bacteria from mouth to brush.

How to Clean Your Brushes Properly?

When it comes to cleaning your make-up brushes properly, there is a technique that needs to be followed since most of the products are either oil-based or water-based. These ingredients make it hard to wash properly. Here is an expert-approved way you can try:

What You Will Need

  • Gentle shampoo or brush cleanser
  • Lukewarm water
  • Towel or brush drying stand

Instructions

  • Soak the bristles in lukewarm water, being careful not to get the base of the brush wet.
  • Use a small amount of cleaner and swish the brush around in your palm gently.
  • Rinse well until water is clear.
  • Straighten the bristles and flat-dry. Note to never stand up straight, because water weakens the glue within the brush.

Pro Tip: Do not use hot water or harsh soap, as these will loosen the bristles and compromise natural hair brushes.

Signs It's Time to Clean (or Replace) Your Brushes

Now, if you cannot keep a tab on cleaning the brushes like mentioned above, there are several signs that it's time to clean your make-up brushes.

  • Makeup applies streaky or unevenly
  • Bristles are stiff or matted together
  • You see breakouts or redness after use
  • Brushes have an unpleasant odour
  • If they can't be cleaned back to life, it may be time to replace them.

Bottomline

Washing your makeup brushes regularly is not only about looks; it's essential skincare hygiene. The general thumb rule is to opt for weekly washing, and more often for liquid or cream-based brushes. Making these tiny changes in your vanity will ensure that you have clearer skin and a fine-finished make-up.
