Suspect Your Child Has Autism? Expert Shares How It Can Be Heavy Metal Poisoning Instead

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition that affects communication, behaviour, and social interaction. Parents and healthcare professionals often face the challenge of identifying autism due to its diverse and overlapping symptoms. One lesser-known factor that can complicate diagnosis is heavy metal poisoning. Certain heavy metals, such as lead, mercury, and arsenic, can cause neurological damage and exhibit symptoms that closely resemble those of autism.

To understand more about this aspect of autism, the Onlymyealth team spoke to Dr Kersi Chavda, Consultant Psychiatry, PD Hinduja Hospital, Khar

What Is Heavy Metal Poisoning?

The United Nations Environment Programme defines heavy metals as naturally occurring elements with high atomic weights and densities. While some heavy metals, like zinc and copper, are essential for bodily functions in trace amounts, others, such as lead, mercury, and arsenic, are toxic even at low levels. Children are particularly vulnerable to heavy metal poisoning due to their developing nervous systems and behaviours such as hand-to-mouth activity, which increases their exposure risk.

According to Dr Chavda, the symptoms of heavy metal poisoning are:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Chills or a low body temperature
  • Dehydration
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Numb feeling in your hands and feet

Heavy Metal Poising Risk Factors

According to Dr Chavda, heavy metal poisoning may occur due to:

  • Industrial exposure
  • Air or water pollution
  • Foods
  • Medicines
  • Improperly coated food containers
  • Ingesting of lead-based paints
  • Peeling or chipping paint from older homes
  • Soil
  • Some cosmetics
  • Spices

“In kids, heavy metal poisoning is usually related to food containers. There was a scare related to vaccination in the past, which recent studies have vociferously negated,” said Dr Chavda.

Similarities Between Autism And Heavy Metal Poisoning

A study led by Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School found that childhood lead poisoning and ASD share some similar symptoms, but there is no substantial evidence linking lead poisoning as a direct cause of ASD. However, there are instances where misdiagnosis can happen.

Citing an example, the study cited a reported case involving a child initially diagnosed with severe autism who was later found to be suffering from chronic lead poisoning. After successful treatment with chelation therapy, the child's hearing and neurodevelopmental status, including both receptive and expressive language abilities, showed significant improvement.

The overlap between heavy metal poisoning and autism symptoms can lead to misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis. Some shared symptoms include:

  • Communication Challenges: Both conditions can result in delayed speech and language development.
  • Social Interaction Difficulties: Children may have trouble making eye contact, understanding social cues, or forming relationships.
  • Repetitive Behaviours: Hand-flapping, rocking, and other repetitive actions are common in both scenarios.
  • Sensory Sensitivities: Increased sensitivity to sensory stimuli such as noise, textures, and lights.

Treating Heavy Metal Poisoning

To mitigate the impact of heavy metal poisoning, Dr Chavda listed some ways:

  • Children's diets become healthier and safer when they focus on wholesome, nutritious meals. Detoxification of heavy metals from your child's body can happen by providing them with foods rich in antioxidants.
  • You can also detoxify heavy metals through proper hydration and regularly consuming fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • The best ingredient for a kid's detox bath is magnesium. A common source to find magnesium is Epsom salts. The Epsom salts release heavy metals out of the body through the skin.

Understanding the potential for heavy metal poisoning to mimic autism symptoms is crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment. While heavy metal poisoning does not directly cause autism, the overlapping symptoms can lead to misdiagnosis or delays. Parents should be aware of environmental risks and ensure their child has a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, proper hydration, and detoxifying practices like Epsom salt baths. Early intervention and appropriate treatments, such as chelation therapy, can significantly improve developmental outcomes, highlighting the importance of vigilance and prevention in safeguarding children's health.
