Adolescence is the period when you will see the greatest change in your child.  The increasing peer influence and a desire to make their own decisions can lead to mistakes. Dealing appropriately with these mistakes is important to help him emerge as a strong adult at the end of his teen years. Read on to understand how to deal with any mistakes your child may make during these years.

  • Let them face the consequences of their own wrongdoing. Encourage them to take responsibility for it.  Intervene only if necessary.
  • Make your rules clear for their misbehavior and wrongdoings. However be flexible as required. Being very stern can also have negative impact and can make the adolescent rebel. Reason out with your child and give them a chance to express their opinion. This makes it more likely that he or she will listen to you and respect you.
  • Let them decide their punishment after a gaffe or misbehavior like no pocket money for 1 week, or no going out with friends for one week.

Rather than reprimanding them for mistakes, discuss ways to help him make the right decisions consistently, or to deal with stress, peer pressure and anxiety. Help him to develop a sense of identity and to set achievable goals. This can help him emerge as a strong and adept adult.
