When we hear of Cortisol or the stress hormone, we always conjure a negative image in our mind. But you can’t really blame yourself because cortisol has always been pitched to us in a bad way. It is always associated with mental health issues, the result of a poor diet, lifestyle and work-life balance, and the fundamental block of many diseases.
But if this hormone is so bad for us, why is it naturally produced in our body? Does it have a crucial role to play which makes it actually beneficial for us in some circumstances? To answer these questions, the Onlymyhealth team spoke to Kesha P Bhavsar, Psychologist, Mpower, Helpline Mumbai.
Can Cortisol Be Good For Us?
As per the University of Rochester, cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands, which are located on top of the kidneys. It is often referred to as the 'stress hormone' because it is released in response to stress and low blood glucose levels.
Myths About Cortisol
A myth about cortisol is that it is solely responsible for weight gain, said Bhavsar. Busting this myth, she said, “Cortisol is responsible for an increase in metabolism. Many combined factors cause weight gain like lifestyle, genetic factors, and hormonal activities.”
While cortisol is often associated with stress, are there situations where it can be beneficial for our health? Bhavsar affirmed, “Yes, it's absolutely possible that one can achieve more health benefits with the help of cortisol.” She listed:
- For instance, in minute stress conditions, cortisol can be utilised to increase the flow of glucose in the bloodstream which could improve the brain functioning and suppresses non essential body functions temporarily.
- Cortisol plays an important role in regulating blood sugar levels, especially while the body is fasting or under active physical exercise. Cortisol helps to mobilise glucose to maintain the energy level.
- Cortisol could be useful in maintaining the supply of metabolic needs, especially in the times of chronic stress and high energy needs.

How Does Cortisol Influence Energy Levels?
Explaining the exact mechanism by which cortisol influences our energy levels and metabolism, and why this is important for our overall health, Bhavsar said, “Cortisol plays a vital part in influencing metabolism and fats which provides additional energy, especially during stress and fasting.”
“Speaking of metabolic regulation, cortisol is so effective, that it can effectively compensate for the activity of enzymes which regulate energy production and storage,” she said, adding that, “Cortisol can even induce hunger and satiety and can thus regulate appetite.”
According to Bhavsar, while reports often suggest that cortisol increases the craving for high calorie food but there can be incidents where the same can be helpful in balancing low energy and regulating our moods.
