Dyslexia is a learning disability but the exact cause of this disorder is not known. As the reason for the disorder is not known preventing dyslexia altogether is not possible. Some interventions which can help to prevent further problems and the effect of dyslexia include:
- Understand dyslexia: A parent can note the earliest signs of dyslexia such as difficulty in learning the letters of the alphabet, difficulty in reading, spelling difficulties, difficulty in understanding rapid instructions, difficulty in learning new words or learning them slowly. Your doctor can help you to further assess but your own observations are equally important. By understanding the symptoms of this disability, you can help in early detection and timely intervention. Early interventions have been shown to be more effective in achieving long-term improvements in learning abilities of a dyslexic child.
- Provide right nutrition: Nutrition is important for a child’s proper development. It will not prevent dyslexia but proper nutrition can prevent any other factor which may impair learning. Make sure your baby gets the right nutrition from the time he is conceived.
- Read to and with your child: Start reading to your child from as early as possible (that is right from the time he is a few weeks older). Listen to recorded books, rhymes and stories with a young child, and with an older child you can read stories and other books with him after he hears them. This helps not only to monitor your child’s development but will also enhance your child’s reading capabilities.
- Consult an expert: If your child is diagnosed with dyslexia, consult an expert. Experts can assess your child and make an intervention plan and teach you steps on how to deal with this. They can help you to get emotionally prepared for this kind of disability.
- Work with your child’s teacher: Inform the school and teachers of your child’s problem as they are also going to handle the problem. Knowledge of the child’s ability can help the teacher to make an individualised education plan for your child so that your child gets one-to-one teaching or extra time and attention for reading and learning activities to stay on track. Meet your child’s teacher to know the progress and identify problem areas.
Having a child with dyslexia can be distressing. But by being attentive to your child’s development and diagnosing it early can improve prognosis and prevent long term learning problems.
