Most often you can treat your dry, tangled hair using home remedies, some knowledge and care.

Detangle when dry

You should avoid trying to detangle your hair while it is wet, or whilewashing it. Wet hair is delicate and susceptible to breakage, and trying to open knots and tangles will cause broken hair and split ends- which can then cause your hair to get more knotted. Never comb your hair while it is wet for the same reason. It is far better to try to open up knots and tangles just before you wash your hair.

Use your fingers

Your fingers do a great job at getting the tangles out as you are utilizing a part of your body it is easier for you to feel the tangle and gently pry it apart. As our fingers are flexible, you can also judge the correct amount of force and the right distance between fingers to use. It is the best option for persons with fine hair that splits and breaks easily.

Use a wide toothed comb

This seems to be the preferred product to use for detangling. It minimizes damage with widely spaced teeth that are large and seamless and in the process can detangle efficiently and remove shed hair. Ideally, use a combination of a wide toothed comb and your fingers. Always start from the bottom, slowly working your way up. Stop combing every time you encounter a knot, use your fingers to open it up, and only then continue combing. This may take a lot of time initially, but with proper care your hair will not get so tangled.

Before a bath

It is recommended to ‘dry detangle’ before a bath or shower by applying oil, conditioner or a mixture of both to the hair. Do this in front of a mirror so you can see the tangles. Oils and conditioners act as a lubricant making the hair ‘slippery’ and easier to manipulate. They also help to moisturize the hair thereby reducing the dryness and matting. Natural home made conditioners such as egg yolk will also help.

After detangling, wash out your hair with a shampoo and reapply a moisturizing conditioner. Rinse out thoroughly. Remember not to towel dry your hair too vigorously as this leads to more knots and tangles. Instead, gently pat dry hair in sections. You also may use a ‘leave in conditioner’ that can be applied after a bath.

Trim your hair

If you are prone to tangles, then maybe it is time to get a hair cut and chop off all your split ends. This gets rid of broken and damaged hair that grows unevenly and causes knots.

Take good care

Experts recommend that we keep our hair clean and adequately moisturized, comb it regularly and not use too many chemicals on hair. Getting rid of split ends, being gentle and patient with your hair and keeping it tied up with a cloth scrunchy or in a loose bun will all help keeping your hair beautiful and tangle-free. Avoid using metal clips and rubber bands as these can tangle and break your hair.
