Mostly every individual is now struggling with erratic schedules, heavy workload and strenuous working hours. With youngsters falling prey to sever back related problems; several new treatments are making way for quick and easy recovery. One such treatment is Minimally Invasive Spinal Technology (MAST).
For Amit Singh, a 34-year-old banker with a loving wife and doting daughter, linking his consistent back pain with what seemed a complex medical condition- lumbar herniated disc- was out of the question till routine activities became an ordeal for him. Advised complete bed rest to prevent further worsening of his condition, is the only earning member of the family, Singh started getting worried about his daughter’s future. Talking about this condition, Neuro Surgeon Dr Manish Vaishya, Fortis Hospital says, “The lower lumbar region endures the heaviest mechanical forces, and thus failure of discs is more common compared to other regions. It is a type of spinal degeneration, presenting itself in the form of numbness or tingling, weakness of affected muscles, severe back pain and pain radiating towards the legs.”
Don’t strain your back
Experts point out that although the backbone is strong enough to support the upper body, a prolonged strain can lead to serious health issues linked to the back. With increasing work hours, stressful lifestyles and more desk jobs, nowadays there is considerable pressure on the backbone, leading to its faster degeneration. Moreover, a low calcium diet and habits like smoking, alcohol intake and improper posture have contributed to the rise in spinal problems, especially in younger people.
About herniated disc
Structurally, our backbone is a long bony structure made up of 33 vertebrae attached with a spongy disc called inter-vertebral disc. In comparison to other musculoskeletal tissues, discs tend to degenerate earlier, and it has been observed that with age there is an associated degeneration of the inter-vertebral discs2.
When there is degeneration, the disc breaks down, and the fluid leaks out through the outer core of the disc, also known as a herniated disc.
“Spinal surgeries take time in healing. With the advent of Minimally Invasive Spinal Technology (MAST) has made spine surgeries much less complicated, quick, safe, cost-effective and scar free,” says Dr Vaishya.
In a study published in Journal of Spine (2013) to probe into the effectiveness of minimal access spine surgeries, it was found that when compared to conventional open surgeries, these advanced surgical procedures provide better clinical outcomes in terms of postoperative recovery and return to normal functions3.
Explaining the procedure, Dr Vaishya says, “MAST is done by making two or three small openings, and the patient can return to his regular routine after recovery. The highly innovative cutting-edge equipment used in this form of surgery not only makes MAST feasible but also brings in an element of efficacy in the entire procedure. The spine problems, which can be almost entirely corrected with MAST are:
- Spine fractures with balloon Kyphoplasty
- Disc prolapse in case of degenerative osteoporosis or tuberculosis by disc replacement surgery or balloon Kyphoplasty
- Stenosis, herniated disc and bone spur by decompression surgery
- Scoliosis by spinal fusion
