Kidney Failure: Expert Shares 7 Early Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

The kidneys have the important functions of filtering out wastes, maintaining a balance of electrolytes, and controlling blood pressure. As they begin to malfunction, the body sends warning signs that should never be ignored. Early detection would avoid severe complications, which makes it very important to be able to recognize signs of kidney failure before they escalate.

We had an interview with Dr Shrey Srivastava, General Physician, Sharda Hospital - Nodia, to shed light on significant warning signs everyone should know about.

1. Unexplained Fatigue and Weakness

One of the first signs of kidney failure is recurring fatigue. "When the kidneys are not working well, the buildup of toxins in the blood makes a person feel incredibly tired and weak," says Dr Srivastav. The symptom usually gets worse with time, impacting daily activities and overall energy.

2. Swelling in Legs, Ankles, or Feet

The kidneys assist the body with maintaining proper fluid balance. If they start to deteriorate, too much fluid can build up, leading to visible swelling, especially in the legs and ankles. "Edema is a red flag that your kidneys may not be effectively removing excess sodium and fluids," warns Dr Srivastav.

3. Alteration in Urination Habits

Changes in urinating patterns can mean kidney problems. Others have greater frequency, particularly during the nighttime (nocturia), and some have lesser output. The urine can become foamy, darker, or even bloody. "Any persistent changes in colour, volume, or consistency of urine should urge medical attention without delay," advises Dr Srivastav.

4. Continuous Nausea and Loss of Appetite

A toxic buildup in the blood from impaired kidneys may result in nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. "Many patients brush this symptom off as a minor stomach problem, but if nausea occurs without an obvious explanation, it may be a sign of waning kidney function," says Dr Srivastav.

5. Difficulty Concentrating and Brain Fog

Mental problems like difficulty concentrating, getting confused, or having memory impairment may occur as kidney function decreases. According to Dr Srivastav, "When waste products build up in the blood, they can impact brain function, causing what's often called 'brain fog.'"

6. Shortness of Breath and High Blood Pressure

Kidneys also regulate blood pressure, and when they don't work properly, hypertension develops or gets aggravated. Moreover, fluid overload in the lungs results in breathlessness. "Shortness of breath may be an indication of fluid overload, which requires immediate medical assessment," highlights Dr Srivastav.

7. Dryness and Itching of Skin

Kidney failure may cause mineral imbalances in calcium and phosphorus, leading to constant itching and dryness. "Most patients report long-standing, uncomfortable itching, which suggests kidney disease," says Dr Srivastav.

Importance of Early Detection of Kidney Failure

Disregarding such warning signs can result in severe complications, such as end-stage renal disease necessitating dialysis or a transplant. Dr Srivastav advises people who are at risk, for example, those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a history of kidney disease in the family, to keep having regular check-ups.

"Taking measures early can make a big difference in kidney health. Do not hesitate and get medical advice if you experience any of these symptoms," he recommends.

Taking Preventive Steps

In order to promote kidney health, Dr Srivastav suggests:

  • Drinking enough water
  • Following a balanced, low-sodium diet
  • Working to control blood sugar and blood pressure levels
  • Avoiding overuse of pain medications and over-the-counter drugs
  • Staying active

Bottomline

Kidney failure is an insidious danger, but being aware of the early warnings will avoid permanent damage. If you have any of these symptoms, don't delay seeing a healthcare provider. Taking care of kidney health today can protect your future well-being.
