Ageing is a universal experience, yet it manifests differently for each individual. As we transition through life, we may find ourselves wondering: Are the changes I’m seeing in my skin and body a normal part of ageing, or are they signs of premature ageing? The truth lies in a complex interplay of several factors like lifestyle, environment, and genetics. But guess what you're not alone!
To understand this and more to make choices that promote healthy ageing, we spoke to our expert Dr Aditi Wadhwa, Consultant, Department of Dermatology, Shardacare Health City - Delhi to answer your question. Here is what she shared with us.
The Normal Ageing Process
Dr Wadhwa shared that signs of normal ageing typically begin to appear in our late 20s or early 30s. At this stage, tiny wrinkles may begin to form, skin may show modest thinning, and you might notice a gradual decrease in skin suppleness. "These changes are a natural part of life and occur as our body’s production of collagen and elastin begins to decline," she said. In simpler terms, collagen and elastin which are the proteins responsible for skin firmness and elasticity.
Normal ageing varies widely among individuals. Factors like genetics play a significant role. Some people may experience these signs earlier or later than their peers and it's a different journey for everyone. While you might spot a friend with smooth skin well into their 40s, you may notice fine lines earlier. "This variability is completely normal," she added.

The Markers of Premature Ageing
Premature ageing often manifests as more pronounced and accelerated signs. Conditions such as deep wrinkles, dark patches, and a leathery skin texture can appear much earlier than expected. So, what causes this? According to Dr Wadhwa, the answer often lies in our lifestyle choices. These may include:
1. Sun Exposure
"Excessive UV exposure is one of the leading causes of premature ageing," she shared. Without adequate sun protection, skin can suffer significant damage, leading to accelerated ageing. "The harmful effects of UV rays break down collagen and elastin fibres in the skin, resulting in sagging and wrinkling that can appear as early as your 20s. Incorporating a daily sunscreen routine can help mitigate these effects," she suggested.
2. Smoking
Smoking is another major factor that contributes to premature ageing. "The toxins in cigarette smoke constrict blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the skin and depleting vital nutrients. This not only leads to a sallow complexion but can also accelerate the formation of wrinkles, particularly around the mouth and eyes. Quitting smoking can lead to visible improvements in skin health," Dr Wadhwa said.
3. Sleep Deprivation
Lack of adequate sleep can wreck your skin more than you can imagine. From dark circles, dull complexion, to increased fine lines, it all comes down to the amount and quality of sleep you have each night. Sleep is the body’s time to repair and regenerate; without it, your skin cannot recover from daily stressors. According to Dr Wadhwa, establishing a consistent sleep routine can promote better skin health and overall well-being.

4. Poor Nutrition
Diet plays a crucial role in how your skin ages. High sugar intake and diets low in antioxidants can accelerate skin ageing. "Sugar can attach to collagen and elastin in a process called glycation, which leads to skin stiffness and loss of elasticity," she clarified. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats can support your skin's resilience against ageing.
While some factors influencing ageing are beyond our control, many lifestyle choices can significantly impact how we age. By adopting healthy habits—such as regular sun protection, quitting smoking, prioritising sleep, and maintaining a balanced diet, one can achieve a more youthful appearance and feel your best at any age.
