A new study has proved that commonly consumed mineral supplements and vitamins do not provide any health benefits or harm. However, it has been revealed that the use of vitamin and mineral supplements does not necessarily cause any harm either.

For the study, researchers examined the most common type of vitamins – supplements. They analyzed mineral beta-carotene, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and selenium in addition to vitamin A, B1, B2, B3 (niacin), B6, B9 (folic acid), C, D and E.

The study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that folic acid and vitamins with folic acid may reduce the chances of a stroke and cardiovascular disease. The use of niacin and antioxidants did not significantly show any effect that might indicate a higher risk of death from a certain cause.

Researchers say that fruits and vegetables are a better source of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. It is more reliable to consume fruits and vegetables to get sufficient fill of both vitamins and minerals, according to the team.

They also found that these supplements did not show any prominent results in preventing heart diseases, heart attack, stroke or death.

One of the vitamin supplements showed the effect of some somatic aspect in folic acid which showed the ability to reduce the risk of heart disease or stroke. After the research, scientists said that "we were surprised to see so little effect of vitamin supplements consumed by people".
