Once coffee was said to be enemy of our health and now studies have proved number of health benefits it can have on your health. It is not easy for a person with diabetes to live with all the restrictions on diet. Especially people who have a sweet tooth, find it extremely challenging to control their urge to eat sweets. However, this does not end here, coffee contains caffeine which is essentially health in neuro responses. There is growing evidence that it might be effective in controlling symptoms of diabetes too. Let us understand if consuming coffee can have any benefits on your health or would it effect you otherwise.
Coffee and Diabetes: What’s the Link?
We spoke to Dr. Gunjan Mishra, Consultant and Endocrinologist at Vozart Healthcare, Bangalore to know about diabetes and influence of coffee on health. Doctor says that most of the studies and research is ongoing in this matter however there have been significant signs that reveal that coffee could be beneficial for your health in type-2 diabetes. Coffee intake in regulated amount can actually lower down the risk of developing type-2 diabetes. It is a big revelation as big population of people who like to start their work with a cup of coffee could be at ease.
Please remember that coffee can reduce the risk of developing diabetes but not controlling it. Those who are already caught up with diabetes might not have any benefits, in fact they could have negative impact of consuming coffee in their diet.
How Diabetes affects your health?
Diabetes is a disease that could actually affect process of your body and way glucose levels in the body are determined. Blood sugar or blood glucose levels could be fueled up or down depending on the condition of diabetes. Accordingly, the muscles and tissues react to your body and circulation of blood.

If the glucose levels become less, then you might faint, have light headedness and further such symptoms. Blood glucose levels go down when the insulin resistance comes to play and you are no longer able to supply glucose to various parts, organs and cells in your body. This condition is called hypoglycemia.
Another condition that could occur is that of hyperglycemia where the blood sugar levels increase to a level that it could cause serious health concerns in your body. It could lead to different conditions and symptoms that might not be easy to control and take the form of chronic type-2 diabetes.
Symptoms of Diabetes
There are various symptoms that are associated with diabetes but some of these are very prominent. We would take a look at these symptoms to take things under control.
- Increased levels of thirst
- Fatigue
- Irritability
- Unexplained weight loss
How can Coffee Prevent you from Diabetes?
There has been a small study that says that diabetes could possibly be prevented because of coffee consumption. The research was conducted by Harvard who tracked over 10 thousand people with diabetes for about 20 years of time period. They concentrated on four-year period and took out the result of coffee of brain of the patients.

The study concluded saying that people who have increased their coffee consumption over one cup per day, then there were 11 percent less chances of developing type-2 diabetes. It is still not evident why coffee has such effects on the person who is developing diabetes. The only possible reason known to doctor is because of short term increase in both glucose and insulin levels of the body.
