Cholera Outbreak In Pune: Tips To Prevent Cholera In Monsoon

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) identified a contaminated water source as the cause of a recent cholera outbreak in Dhawade vasti, Bhosari. The first case was reported on June 8th, and over 133 people have shown symptoms.

To curb this cholera outbreak in Pune, the PCMC also set up field hospitals in Dhawade vasti, sent health teams to conduct door-to-door checks to identify patients, collected samples from the area and sent them for testing.

While the efforts of PCMC are commendable and necessary for preventing the spread of cholera, the first step to tackling any disease is at an individual level. This is even more important now as the monsoon is about to begin. According to a study published in the International Journal of Surgery: Global Health, cholera spreads through contaminated water, especially during heavy rains like monsoons.

Ways To Prevent Cholera In Monsoon

The World Health Organisation defines cholera as a serious diarrhoeal illness caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria. It spreads when people ingest food or water contaminated with the bacteria. Cholera is most common in places with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water.

The most common symptoms of cholera are:

  • Severe diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Dehydration (can be life-threatening if untreated)

Talking to the Onlymyhealth team, Dr Gowri Kulkarni, Head Of Medical Operations, MediBuddy provided some helpful tips to help you prevent cholera.

Drink Clean Water

Contaminated water is the main culprit in spreading cholera, especially when water is scarce. To prevent this, Dr Kulkarni suggested, “Only drink boiled, bottled, or treated water with iodine or chlorine. Skip ice cubes or drinks made with untreated water. These can harbour the cholera bacteria.”

Carry hand sanitisers for situations when clean water is unavailable.”

“Handwashing helps remove bacteria from your hands and prevents you from accidentally ingesting it,” he added.
