Breast Cancer Survivors should Relax to Recover Well

A study published in Psycho-Oncology by Carsten Wrosch of Concordia University and Catherine Sabiston of McGill's Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education suggested that breast cancer survivors,  who had changed their lifestyle habits showed signs of a  healthy well-being overall.  Not only did their lifestyle improve, but also their level of physical activity.


The focus of Wrosch and Sabiston’s study was to find out ways to motivate breast cancer survivors to live a more active life. Statistics showed that about half of breast cancer survivors were overweight or obese and had a sedentary lifestyle than women without breast cancer.


In their study, both the researchers analysed 176 breast cancer survivors aged between 28 to 79 years. All the volunteers were diagnosed with breast cancer 11 months before the study and were about to complete three months of post breast cancer treatment.


In the beginning of the study, volunteers were asked to submit self-reports of physical activity, sedentary activity, emotional well-being and any health related symptoms such as nausea and pain. The volunteers were asked to change their old lifestyle habits. After three months of changed habits, a similar report was asked. On the comparison of both the reports, it was found that reengagement of goals induced better physical as well as emotional well-being.


Sabiston added that indulging in 150 minutes of intense physical exercise per week would help breast cancer survivors to reap various health benefits. She further said that it is completely safe and effective for them to exercise.


Wrosch said that this combined study revealed that a breast cancer survivor’s capacity to change her lifestyle habits and goals plays an important role in living a life with high physical activity and less sedentary activity, thereby having an overall improved physical and emotional well-being.
