Type 1 diabetes is a life-long condition, which has no cure. Currently there are no known measures to prevent this type of diabetes. Studies are being done to find measures to prevent the disease in those who are most likely to develop it. People with type 1 diabetes can prevent or delay the development of the complications of this disease by keeping their blood sugar within a target range. Below are a few tips that will help you prevent complications of type 1 diabetes.

- Keep blood sugar in a target range: Treatment generally aims to keep blood sugar levels between 80 and 120 mg/dL (4.4 to 6.7 mmol/L) in the daytime and between 100 and 140 mg/dL (5.6 to 7.8 mmol/L) at night. Aim to keep HbA1C (glycosylated hemoglobin) at a rate less than 7%.
- Go for regular follow-ups: Regular follow-ups at the clinic can help you monitor blood sugar levels, maintain them as normal as possible and detect early signs of complications.

- Be physically active: Regular exercises or any other physical activity (moderate physical activity for 30 minutes on most days of the week) can help to maintain the blood sugar levels and body weight.
- Eat healthy: Eat a balanced and healthy diet to get enough calories to maintain a healthy weight. Include a variety of food from each major food group such as fruits, vegetable, whole grains, dairy products etc in your diet. This will ensure that you get the required protein, vitamins, minerals and fiber that your body needs. Limit on the intake of carbohydrates, processed food and fatty food. Apart from this, take care of your portion sizes as more calories than required ---even as proteins impair blood sugar control.
- Avoid sweets and alcohol: Limit the intake of sweets, and alcoholic beverages.
- Treat other co-morbid conditions: If you have other health problems such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol, the risk of complications due to diabetes are increased; this makes appropriate management of these conditions important.
