How to Maintain Healthy Blood Sugar Levels

Diabetics have elevated blood sugar level, which can cause damage to liver and kidneys. Factors such as  diet, performing exercises, weight, following the treatment course, stress levels and family history of diabetes affect your chances of having increased blood sugar level.  Diabetes can be easily managed with six steps, which have been discussed below:

Regular Self-check up

Make a point to check your blood sugar levels after an interval of few days. You can easily do it at home with a blood sugar monitor. Ask your doctor when during a day should you check your glucose levels. Usually it is done before and after meals and before bedtime. In case of elevated sugar levels, consult an endocrinologist to know how to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

Medications

High blood sugar levels can be dangerous for your overall health. Therefore, never skip or forget your treatment medication. To control diabetes, usually insulin is given and some oral medication. Follow your medication routine as per as your doctor's instructions.

Eat Right

The main task which diabetics need to do is to watch out for carbohydrates in their diet. Diet must include plenty of fruits and vegetables which have low calorie count. Avoid eating mango, potato, grapes and sapodilla fruit (chikoo).  Consume animal by-products and sweets in moderation. Incorporate all forms of whole grains. Put a limit on your intake of alcoholic beverages and salty food items. The best way to maintain healthy blood glucose levels is to take the same amount of all essential nutrients at same time every day.

Exercise Daily

To maintain your elevated blood sugar level, stick to regular exercising. Perform 30 minutes of exercise for five days in a week to reduce your body’s insulin resistance. Physical workout will bring down your soaring blood sugar level by providing glucose to the cells to produce energy. Instead of hitting the gym for physical workout, go for simpler options such as brisk walking, swimming, aerobics and cycling.

Right Body Weight

First, know your appropriate weight depending on your age and height. Maintaining healthy body weight, especially if it is a genetic condition, is important to prevent various diabetic complications.

Manage Stress

Stress does not cause diabetes, but when in stress you are more likely to eat incorrectly or skipping meals, which is even worse. In stress, you may altogether forget to take your medication. Practice yoga and meditation to relax and re-energise.
