Colour test
Submerge a few saffron strands in water. Real saffron will release a golden colour, while the fake will release a dark red colour.
Smell and taste test
Real saffron will havea sweet aroma with a slightly bitter taste, while the fake saffron will have a sweet taste.
Solubility test
Soak a few strands in milk for a few minutes. The real one will release a golden colour, while the fake one will release red residue.
Paper test
Place the saffron strands between two moistened papers or tissue. Real saffron will release a golden yellow colour, while the fake will release a red colour.
Appearance test
Real saffron has trumpet-like strands like a flower, while the fake saffron contains uniform, straight strands.
