A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a common bacterial infection that affects the urethra, ureters, bladder or kidneys. Women are more prone to UTIs due to their shorter urethra, making it easier for bacteria to enter the urinary tract. If you suspect a UTI, here are some key symptoms to watch for. Tap to read!
Fever
When a UTI spreads from the bladder to the kidneys, it can lead to a kidney infection (pyelonephritis), causing fever and making the condition more severe.
Diarrhea
UTIs are often treated with antibiotics, which can sometimes disrupt gut health, leading to diarrhea. In some cases, a severe UTI itself can also trigger diarrhea.
Fatigue
Fatigue is common during a UTI as the immune system uses energy to fight the infection, disrupting sleep and leading to dehydration.
Loss of Appetite
The immune system releases cytokines (inflammatory chemicals) while fighting infections, which can disrupt bodily functions and cause loss of appetite.
Pain in the Lower Back or Vagina
A UTI can cause kidney inflammation, resulting in lower back pain. If the infection spreads to surrounding tissues, such as the vagina, it may cause vaginal pain as well.
