Body swelling, also known as oedema, is caused when the body retains fluid in excess of normal quantities. These are several illnesses that can cause fluid retention in the body. Here are some common illnesses that can cause oedema.

Liver Damage

Your liver can get damaged due to cirrhosis, which leads to an excess fluid buildup in the stomach and legs. When the fluid gets deposited in the liver, it is known as ascites.

Kidney Disease

Salts and fluids can accumulate in the blood due to kidney diseases. Oedema associated with this issue typically affects the legs and the area around the eyes.

Prolonged Protein Deficiency

Oedema can develop if there is a low protein intake in the diet and if this deficiency persists for too long. Consider talking to your doctor about this, as this may lead to severe problems.

Malfunctioned Lymphatic System

Your body can retain excess fluid if your lymphatic system is not working effectively. This happens when your lymphatic system becomes damaged or compromised.

Congestive Heart Failure

In this condition, one or both of the heart's bottom chambers stop effectively pumping blood. So, blood may pool in the legs, ankles, and feet, leading to oedema.

In the condition when your body is retaining more fluid than usual, you should take your doctor into account for the diagnosis of the problems and their remedial methods.
