Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also known as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are infections that are primarily spread through sexual contact. They can affect both men and women, and some can be transmitted through other forms of intimate contact as well. Here are 7 signs of it.

Unusual Discharge

One of the most common signs of an STI is an abnormal discharge from the vagina, penis, or anus. The discharge may be thick, frothy, yellow, green, or have a foul odour.

Pain Or Burning Sensation

Many STIs can cause discomfort or a burning sensation during urination. This is often accompanied by an increased frequency of urination.

Genital Sores Or Bumps

STIs like herpes and syphilis can cause the development of painful sores, blisters, or ulcers on the genitals, mouth, or anus.

Itching Or Irritation

Persistent itching or irritation in the genital area can be a sign of an STI, particularly if it's accompanied by a rash.

Pelvic Or Abdominal Pain

Some STIs, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), can cause pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis.

Flu-Like Symptoms

Certain STIs, including HIV and early stages of syphilis, can cause flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, and body aches.

Unexplained Weight Loss Or Fatigue

In advanced stages of some STIs, such as HIV/AIDS, unexplained weight loss, chronic fatigue, and general weakness may occur.

It's important to note that the symptoms of STIs can vary widely, and some infections may not cause any noticeable symptoms at all. Regular sexual health check-ups, practising safe sex, using barrier methods (e.condoms), and open communication with sexual partners can help reduce the risk of STIs and ensure early detection and treatment if necessary.
