Absence seizure refers to an epileptic event recognised by loss of awareness and responsiveness. The condition affects children under 12 and sometimes adults creating a disturbance in the mood, cognition, memory, and attention. Tap to check its symptoms and to look out for them.
Zoning Out
It might seem like the person is zoning out, however, they are experiencing a seizure lasting up to 10 to 20 seconds.
Unresponsive
While having a seizure, the person may seem unresponsive. Even though they are conscious they won’t be able to reply if you ask them something.
Strange Body Movements
They may experience minor jerking or twitching of the fingers or mouth during the seizure. These movements are usually not noticeable as they occur for a short period.
Fluttering of Eyes
While it may seem like the person is blinking their eyes rapidly, this is a symptom of an absence seizure. In some cases, their eyes may also roll back.
Repetitive Behaviour
While experiencing a seizure, the person might display repetitive movements like smacking lips, chewing, or swallowing.
Activity Pause
When a seizure occurs, whatever the person is doing, whether talking, walking, or working, they suddenly pause without any warning.
Confusion
After a seizure, the person may feel confused and lose track of what they are doing, having no memory of the seizure itself.
Is This Condition Serious?
Absence Seizures are generally not dangerous as they are brief and do not cause any injury. However, they can be disruptive in situations where full attention is required like driving.
