Scabies is an itchy skin problem which is caused by a tiny burrowing mite known as Scarcoptes scabiei. So what happens in scabies? The mite causes intense itching in the area of burrows especially during the night. Since scabies is a contagious condition, it may spread quickly through close physical contact in a family, child care group, and even in school class. Therefore, doctors mostly recommend treatment for entire families. So, how to know if someone has scabies? The common signs and symptoms of scabies include severe itching especially at night, thin, irregular burrow tracks made up of tiny blisters or bumps on the skin. Although it can occur at any part of your body but most common sites include area between fingers, in armpits, around waist, along the insides of wrists, on the inner elbow, on the soles of the feet, around breasts. These symptoms may take weeks to show up because of which you may spread scabies even if you don’t have any signs or symptoms. To kill the mites promptly, you will be advised to apply anti-scabitic and anti allergy medications. Use hot, soapy water to wash all clothing, towels and bedding used within three days before beginning treatment. Dry with high heat. Dry-clean items you can't wash at home.
