For a lot of people, their voice is everything for them. It becomes a huge problem when their vocal hygiene is complicated. People might struggle with their voices for various causes, including overuse, acid reflux, and dehydration.
Stay Hydrated
Hydration is critical for your vocal cords. So, drink at least two to three litres of water throughout the day. Limit your water intake in case you suffer from heart or kidney disease.
Voice Rest
Like other parts of your body, your vocal cords are also made of muscles and need rest. Take a rest of at least 10 minutes after every one to two hours of using your voice.
Avoid Shouting & Whispering
Shouting and whispering equally harm your vocal cords. So, check your pitch while talking or singing to avoid damage.
Avoid Smoking & Alcohol
Smoking and alcohol dehydrate your vocal cords and increase acid reflux irritating your throat.
Avoid Caffeine
Like alcohol, tea and coffee dehydrate and increase acid reflux, irritating your vocal cords and throat. Thus, the benefit lies in limiting their intake.
Limit Spicy & Oily Foods
Oily and spicy meals irritate your throat lining and create acid reflux, causing more damage to your voice and vocal cords.
Any change in your voice which is not usual, is an alarm to visit a doctor. If your voice condition is acute, give yourself some time. But if it has been five to six days, you should see a doctor.
