People these days are so busy with their work schedules and duties that they can only sleep when it suits them. Work schedules might affect sleep patterns, particularly for shift workers.

SLEEP DISORDERS

According to a recent study that was published in the journal Frontiers in Psychiatry, 51% of night shift workers had at least one sleep disorder. Tap to learn about it from Dr. Sibasish Dey, Head of Medical Affairs, South Asia, ResMed.

BODY CLOCK DISTURBANCE

According to Dr. Dey, when the body clock gets disturbed, it leads to sleep deprivation. When the sun sets, the brain also generates the hormone melatonin, which promotes feelings of relaxation and sleepiness.

CAN CAUSE ROAD ACCIDENTS

Sleep deprivation may also increase the likelihood of road accidents, as lack of sleep and changes in the circadian cycle create a condition that can result in drowsy driving.

PRIORTISE SLEEP

According to Dr. Dey, due to a lack of awareness, health insurance or policies rarely cover sleep disorders. Policies that prioritise sleep health must be added and implemented for things to proceed.

TREATMENT

Dr. Dey suggests that shift workers need adequate diagnosis and treatment alternatives to reduce the risk factors associated with sleep disorders.
