Non-stick cooking utensils are coated with Teflon (PTFE) for easy cooking and cleaning. But do you know it can harm your health by releasing harmful chemicals? Tap to read!

What problem does it cause?

When heated above 170°C, Teflon can break down, releasing toxic fumes such as PFA and PFOA. These chemicals are linked to cancer, thyroid and respiratory issues.

Microplastics

Excessive scratching and damaged coating can release harmful microplastics and nanoplastics into your food.

Kidney health

Older cookware still contains PFOA, a chemical that can accumulate in the body and increase the risk of testicular cancer.

How to use?

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), avoid cooking in pans above 170°C. Do not preheat pans and use low to medium heat for cooking.

Safer alternatives

Instead of non-stick pans, cook in mud pots, ceramic, cast iron and stainless steel pots. These are safe for cooking.
