Makar sakranti will be celebrated on January 14 this year. Puran poli is the traditional Mahrashtrian dish prepared during makar saktanti. It is a sweet flatbread stuffed with dal. Tap to read the easy recipe to make puran poli at home.
Ingredients
One cup maida, one cup atta, one tablespoon of salt, 4-5 tablespoons of ghee, one cup of water, one-fourth tablespoon of turmeric powder, one cup of chana dal, two cups of water, one cup of grated jaggery, one-fourth cup of sugar, half a teaspoon of cardamom powder, and a pinch of nutmeg powder.
Prepare dal
Soak the dal overnight to soften. Transfer the soaked dal to a pressure cooker with water and cook for 3-4 whistles.
Cook stuffing
Blend the cooked dal into a coarse paste. Heat the two tablespoons of ghee into a pan and add mashed dal.
Add jaggery
Add jaggery and sugar to the pan and stir it continuously until it is melted. Cook it on a low flame and combine ingredients.
Add spices
Now, add cinnamon powder and nutmeg powder to the mixture. Turn off the flame and let it cool down.
Prepare dough
Combine wheat flour, maida, salt, turmeric, and ghee. Add water gradually and knead a soft dough. Rest the dough for 30 minutes.
Roll chapatis
Roll out flat chapatis out of dough and stuff small part of filling. Fold the stuffing and role it again into a circle.
Cook puran poli
Cook the chapatis on medium flame for 1-2 minutes. Apply ghee on both sides and cook until golden brown. Seve with milk or pickle.
