Tennis elbow is a condition that occurs when you overuse your arm, forearm and hand muscles resulting in elbow pain. Most people think that it can only happen to people who play tennis but the truth is that it can happen to anyone. The term came into use because it can be significant problem for some tennis players. What exactly leads to tennis elbow? Well, any abrupt or subtle injury to the muscle or tendon area around the outside of the elbow results in tennis elbow. Signs and symptoms of tennis elbow include increasing pain around the outside of the elbow, development of sudden pain, pain gets worse while shaking hands or squeezing, or while stabilizing or moving the wrist with force. How is it diagnosed? Well, first thing first, tennis elbow cannot be diagnosed from blood tests and x-rays. Your doctors will diagnose it with description of pain you will tell him and he may also ask you to do certain physical exam to know if your pain worsens when you try to extend your wrist against resistance. You may experience pain around the elbow due to some other conditions which why it becomes even more important to diagnose the exact cause so that you can be prescribed appropriate treatment. Treatment options for tennis elbow include physical therapy, forarm bracing to rest the tendons, topical anti inflammatory gels, topical cortisone gels and cortisone injections.
