Dr Pramod Kumar Julka, Senior Director, Max Oncology Daycare Centre, talks about the diagnosis and treatment of peritoneal cancer and states how peritoneal cancer is a rather rare form of cancer, therefore not commonly heard of. While it has ovarian remnants, it is still less common than ovarian cancer and is more prevalent in women but can also be found in men in sometimes.

What is peritoneal cancer? What are the symptoms of peritoneal cancer?

The inner lining of the abdomen is known as the peritoneum. The peritoneum secretes the fluid in which the organs float. The cancer which develops in this lining is known as peritoneal cancer. When the embryonic development takes place during pregnancy, some ovarian cells accumulate in the peritoneum because the peritoneum covers the uterus and the ovaries as well. These ovarian cells develop into cancer in the peritoneum. That is why this cancer is more common in females. There are no specific symptoms of this cancer. When a woman experiences bleeding post menopause, it indicates the first stage of cancer. It also shows some vague symptoms like gas or weight gain in elderly age. If a woman experiences such symptoms then she should consult a doctor immediately.

What are the similarities between peritoneal cancer and ovarian cancer?

Just like peritoneal cancer, ovarian cancer shows vague symptoms. More than 70 percent of the patients get themselves diagnosed in the third stage because they do not experience any major symptom. So the patient should know how to detect the cancer at an early stage. Women should get themselves checked every year to detect the cancer at its first stage. The check-up should include an ultrasound of the abdomen. After the age of 45, regular checkups can help in early detection. Peritoneal cancer is very rare, only regular checkup can detect it in the early stage.

Why women are at a higher risk of peritoneal cancer than men?

The reproductive organs of the women- uterus and ovaries are included in the peritoneum lining which puts women at a higher risk. Whereas in men colorectal cancer is the only cause of peritoneal cancer.

What is the treatment for peritoneal cancer?

To prevent the disease regular checkups are very necessary so that surgery can treat the condition. Surgery is the main treatment option.

What is peritoneal cancer examined and what is its treatment?

At the onset of symptoms, there is usually an abdominal stomach, dizziness and pain problems, so doctors can advise ultrasound. The doctor will first examine your medical history to diagnose peritoneal cancer. Then your doctor will try to figure out the problems you are having through a physical examination. The treatment usually starts when the cancer is confirmed.
