How to treat heel pain

Did you know your foot and ankle are made up of 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 tendons? And you will be surprised to know that heel is the largest bone in your foot. Overuse of heel or injury to it can lead to heel pain ranging from mild to disabling. So, what causes heel pain? There are number of causes that can be blamed for overuse of the heel bone such as wearing shoes that do not fit your properly, being overweight and pounding your feet on hard surfaces. Such strains can disturb heels bones, muscles or tendons, resulting in painful heels. If you notice first sign of pain the heel, the first thing you need to do is to rest. Avoid running, walking or using treadmill as doing so may worsen the pain. You can make use of ice to get relief from the heel pain, wrap few ice cubes in a towel and put it over the arch for 20 minutes every evening. Stretching your calf several times throughout the day can also provide you relief from the pain. Another important thing that can help get rid of the pain is keep wearing the shoes all the times. Yes, that right, going barefoot will only worsen the pain. But make sure you pick shoes that are rigid and bend only where the foot bends that is at the toes.
