While diabetes remains one of the top lifestyle diseases in the country, it seems that a larger part of the population is still unaware of this condition or have poor knowledge. Did you know India is called the diabetes capital of the world? Around 17% of the total diabetes cases in the world are diagnosed in India, which is alarming. According to a recent ICMR study, it was found that over 101 million Indians are living with diabetes, which accounts for 11% of the Indian population.
What is diabetes?
This is a chronic disease when the pancreas is either unable to produce sufficient amounts of insulin or our body is unable to effectively use the insulin produced by the gland. Due to this, blood sugar levels get disturbed as insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar of the human body.
Surprisingly, a lot of people did not know about diabetes as a disease and how it is caused. This shows lack of awareness which is indeed a crucial factor that contributes to the rising cases of diabetes in the country. It is important that we are vigilant about lifestyle diseases like diabetes to stay preventive as these are mostly irreversible.
