According to a study published in the journal ‘Nature Communications’, it so happens as when you are hungry and craving food, the electrical activity in the brain modifies making your brain less picky. Thus, you like whatever you get.
When someone is hungry, their palate recognizes the taste of sweet more than bitter. This is why you don’t feel bitter taste as your palates aren’t considering it.
The team of researchers from the National Institute for Physiological Sciences, Okazaki, Japan, conducted this study on mice. They starved the mice and found that when a mouse is hungry, their brain alters the working of taste buds. After analyzing the brain functions, they found that a small region of the brain named ‘hypothalamus’ regulates certain functions including appetite, emotional responses, etc. These nerves control the taste buds of the mouse.
“These neurons are found in the hypothalamus, which is a brain region that plays a vital role in appetite regulation,” said lead author Ou Fu. “We selectively activated these neurons in mice to see whether they influence the perception of tastes observed under fasting conditions,” he added.
In humans too, these get activated when the person is hungry and makes it easy for him to consume even a bitter food.
Researchers also stated that switching these preferences manually can help a person control his appetite. This is particularly beneficial for obese people to regulate their eating habits. In general, our body likes sweet taste as it has calories that convert to energy which is positive for the body. On the other hand, bitter food is disliked as your body considers it negative thinking that something isn’t right.
