The factors which affect the hair include the individual’s age and three phases of hair growth- anagen, catagen and telogen phases. Know how your hair grows and falls.
Hair grows in three phases on your head. It involves growth, degradation and resting stages which is normal for hair growth. These are called the anagen, catagen and telogen phases. Each hair on the human body is in one among the three stages. After the cycle of hair growth is complete, the whole process restarts. The hair grows at the speed of 1.25 centimetres to 0.5 inches in a month.
The Three Phases of Normal Hair Growth Cycle
Anagen– It is the growing phase in the cycle of hair growth and can last from 2 to 8 years. The period of time a particular strand of hair stays in this stage determines its length. Apart from length, the rate of growth of hair is also depends on how long it stays in this phase. The hair follicles in this period of hair growth remain under the dermal layer of the skin and nourish it. At any given time, you can expect 85 percent of your hair to be in this stage.
Catagen– Changes in the body determine when the anagen phase would end and the catagen phase begins. In this phase the follicle renews itself. The hair follicle shrinks and the blood supply is cut off. This phase lasts for 2 to 4 weeks during which the hair shrinks because its blood supply is cut off. When the hair shaft is around one-sixth of its fully grown length, it is pushed out. Although the hair’s length is not increasing in this phase, the fibres that gradually push the hair out tend to push them up.
Telogen– This is the resting phase of the hair in which the hair remains dormant and can last from one to four months. In any given time, 10 to 15 percent of the hairs on your head are in this stage. It is followed by the telogen phase on the same hair root from where it is pushed out. The new growing strand of hair pushes out the hair resting in the telogen phase.
The factors which affect the growth of hair include the individual’s age, the intake of natural supplements, levels of hormone, and various physiologic and pathologic factors. So, do not freak out when you find many hair breaking from your head as it is natural for hair to shed up to 100 strands in a day. All of them are in their telogen phase.
