On Monday, Aamir Khan's daughter Ira Khan took to her Instagram handle and shared that she gained 20 kgs in the last few years. It has been proving to be problematic as she is struggling with 'self-motivation' and in the 'self-image department'. Ira is currently in Germany and quite determined to lose weight. Along with some pictures of herself, Ira also mentioned how she fasted for 15 days to start her weight loss journey. Is fasting an effective option for weight loss? Read further to know more about the side effects of fasting for weight loss and the right kind of fasting that one should go for.  

While sharing the post with her fans and followers, Ira captioned it as, "I recently fasted for 15 days to help me kickstart my attempt to lose weight. I haven't been doing so well with the self-motivation and self-image department. I've been very active for most of my life and then in the past 4-5 years, I've been very inactive. I've put on 20kgs. And it's been really messing with my head."

"Anyway, that among other things were on the list to work on in Germany. I didn't lose a significant amount of weight in numbers - not that I could sustain anyway. But I did find a renewed motivation to try harder. And I found a rhythm. I'm doing everything I can to hold on to it now. I did a lot of thinking and reflection and monitoring," she added. Ira further continued saying, "I learnt some cool things. Things in the self-work department and general life epiphanies that I'm really looking forward to sharing. Fasting for weight loss 

Fasting is a quick way of weight loss, which has a list of both pros and cons. Reducing your calorie intake with help in losing weight, but it is important to do it in a healthy manner. There are various types of weight loss diets related to fasting such as intermittent fasting and detox diet. Dr. Anjali says, "It totally depends on how you are fasting. If you are staying hungry the whole day or are following liquid fasting then it is not healthy for an individual in the long term. It leads to nutritional deficiencies and weakness. However, intermittent fasting is another type of fasting that can be effective and healthy, only under the guidance of an expert. At times, fasting can lead to serious health consequences such as low energy levels, protein levels and even depression." 

Side effects of fasting for weight loss

If you are fasting, the weight starts dropping as the water levels go down. But, you need to choose a different formula for healthy weight loss. Crash diets can lead to several health problems and most experts don't recommend it. According to Dr. Anjali, here are the main side effects: 

1. Low blood sugar 

Fasting can cause one to suffer from low blood sugar levels or hypoglycemia. If you have diabetes, then it is not suggested to follow fasting for weight loss. It is important to take your diet under an expert's watch. Not eating a good amount of carbohydrates or daily exercise can result in low blood sugar levels for everyone, and not just diabetics. 

2. Dehydration 

Prolonged fasting can lead to a high risk of dehydration problems as most people do not focus on water consumption. Dry fasting can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance in the body. If you don't eat enough, it can also result in major effects of dehydration

3. Weakness and dizziness

An unhealthy fasting can lead to dizziness, weakness,fatigue, headaches and even fainting in some people. Nutritional deficiencies, low energy levels and hunger can make you feel extremely weak. This can harm your career performance and result in depression and mood swings as well.

4. Muscle pain

Fasting can cause muscle cramps as there is a chance of water loss in the body. Muscle pain and loss is a common problem in weight loss diets as there is a calorie and water deficit. Instead of fasting, choose a healthy eating plan to avoid such long term health issues.
