Sprain is an issue that people face when they suddenly twist their joints. Leg sprains, knee sprains and shoulder sprains are most common and you can easily treat them at home. Imagine, you are walking and suddenly your leg twists, it causes a sprain. The actual definition of sprain is stretching or tearing of ligaments. You would feel pain, swelling and you will be unable to walk when you have a sprain. This is not something to panic about as it is very easy to treat a sprain at home. Sometimes, it can be tackled with physiotherapy but it may require medical intervention in some cases. In this video Dr. Jashan Vishwanath, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre is telling you how to give first-aid or initial treatment to sprains at home.
Practice RICE Therapy
R stands for rest, I for ice, C for compression and E for elevation. If you get a sprain, you must provide ample rest to the affected part. Apply ice on the affected area to relieve the pain and muscle soreness. Wear a bandage or cap on the area to provide support. This would restrict the movement and allow healing. Lastly, elevate the body part where a sprain has occurred. For example, if you have a leg sprain, elevate your leg to some height to relieve pain.
These were the four major methods of providing initial treatment at home. Most people get relief from these but if you don't visit a doctor to get treated.
